Salvation Army to make changes to their food distribution system in March

The Salvation Army is looking to make a positive change to their monthly food distribution days.

BRYAN, Texas — For the past few months, the Salvation Army has been seeing around 70 families come in to use their food pantry, and now in March, they’re gearing up for some positive changes.

The non-profit has had drive-through food distribution days for families and individuals who have registered to receive a monthly supply of groceries.

“We do the dry staples, we do canned goods, healthy snacks, meat, chicken or ground beef and we also give water and drinks,” said Salvation Army Caseworker Glenisha Hunter.

Now they’re looking to make the distribution days more enjoyable for their clients.

“We’ll be doing pantry choice, so we’re allowing the families to come inside and pick their own items for their household so it's almost like going to Kroger and HEB," Hunter explained. "You’re able to come in and shop so we have the shopping carts, we’ll have the canned goods on the shelf where you can see what it is instead of it being in a bag and they can just pick out what they need for their household because a lot of times when we bag it up, there are certain things that they don’t eat, but with the pantry choice they can come and shop for themselves."

The Brazos Valley Food Bank is prepared to supply the Salvation Army with more food if their client list increases.

“If they’re a new client they just fill out an application and it normally takes about two or three minutes and we still provide them with food,” said Hunter.
