A man was arrested Saturday night at The Element apartments in Bryan. Police said they found him opening packages he had taken from apartment porches. He's also accused of stealing mail and breaking into vehicles in the parking lot.

BRYAN, Texas — A man was arrested late Saturday night at an apartment complex in Bryan after a passerby called police to report suspicious activity in the parking lot.

Bryan Ramirez, 23, last known address as Navasota, is charged with burglary of a building, possession of a controlled substance, theft of mail, possession of marijuana and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

It happened Saturday just after 11 p.m. at The Element at University Drive apartment complex on the 4400 block of Carter Creek Parkway. A person called police after they spotted a man, later identified as Ramirez, trying several doors to cars parked in the parking lot of the complex.

The witness said they had heard three car alarms going off in the north part of the complex and had seen a suspicious person over by one of the buildings. Police said they found Ramirez in a vehicle going through a box on the passenger seat. When they asked to speak to him, Ramirez didn't want to talk with them and would only crack the window slightly, they said.

Police said they asked Ramirez if he had seen anything suspicious and he told them he had seen a person over by one of the buildings. Ramirez said he was opening a Christmas present from a friend who lived at one of the apartments, but could not tell officers the name of the friend, police said.

Bryan Ramirez, 23, is facing several charges after being accused of porch pirating, stealing mail and drug possession after he was found in the parking lot of a Bryan apartment complex.

When Ramirez refused to get out of the car, officers at the scene said they had to pull him out. Upon searching the car, officers said they found two glass pipes, a Xanax bar, a blunt with marijuana in it, a black grinder with marijuana in it and a plastic baggie of marijuana.

They also said they found a package with several Christmas presents addressed to a person at the apartment complex, a black iPod that had been taken from another vehicle in the parking lot, a home theater sound bar, stolen black iPhone, a gray toolbox found to belong to another person at an apartment at The Element, electronic rear view mirror, picnic time basket and Tom Ford sunglasses.

Officers also said they found an empty box outside one of the apartment buildings that belonged to two Blue Steel 9mm magazines that were found inside Ramirez's vehicle. These also belonged to a person who lives at the complex, police said, according the packaging label.

When confronted with the evidence, officers at the scene said Ramirez then admitted to breaking into several vehicles in the parking lot and stealing packages from door steps in the apartment complex. Ramirez said he wasn't sure how many vehicles and door steps he had stolen from because he was "intoxicated," according to police.

This is a great example of "see something, say something." Several of the burglary victims are pressing charges against Ramirez, but some are not. Ramirez is currently in the Brazos County Jail on $21,000 bond.
